About SouthWesties ABQ
Our Mission
SouthWesties ABQ is a nonprofit dedicated to growing West Coast Swing in New Mexico. We believe dance is for everyone — and we mean that. Our Thursday nights bring together beginners and experienced dancers alike in a space that's welcoming, non-competitive, and just plain fun.
We're committed to a non-discriminatory environment for all participants regardless of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, skill level, or any other characteristic.
What Is West Coast Swing?
West Coast Swing is a partner dance characterized by its elastic, slotted style. It emerged from the California ballroom scene and has evolved into one of the most adaptable social dances in the world — it works with blues, pop, hip-hop, country, Latin, and virtually any other genre with a beat.
Because it's a social dance, there are no set routines. Leaders and followers improvise together, making each dance a unique conversation. That spontaneity is a big reason people fall in love with it.
Our Thursday Nights
Every Thursday at Lloyd Shaw Dance Center we run:
- 7:00–7:45 PM — Beginner Lesson: A structured intro to West Coast Swing basics. Assumes zero experience.
- 7:45–10:00 PM — Social Dance: Open floor for all levels. Music ranges from classic WCS to contemporary hits.
You don't need a partner, and you don't need to have attended before. Just show up.
